The mission of the Department of Consumer Sciences at The University of Alabama is to provide strong undergraduate and graduate programs, contribute to the generation of knowledge in consumer sciences, and apply that knowledge to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities across Alabama and beyond.
The department is a dynamic and growing academic community dedicated to preparing students for impactful careers in today’s complex consumer environment. With approximately 200 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, and supported by 13 full-time faculty members and a strong network of adjunct instructors, it fosters a supportive and intellectually engaging environment that promotes both academic excellence and practical skill development.
At the undergraduate level, students major in Consumer Sciences with concentrations in Consumer Affairs, Family Financial Counseling and Planning, and Digital Consumer Engagement. These programs provide a strong foundation in consumer behavior, financial decision-making, and digital marketplace strategies, with a strong emphasis on experiential learning and real-world application.
The department’s graduate programs include Family Financial Counseling and Planning and Consumer Economics, as well as a Conflict Resolution certificate. These programs are designed to develop advanced analytical, research, and professional competencies, preparing graduates for leadership roles in academia, industry, and public service.
Through rigorous coursework, industry engagement, and research opportunities, the Department of Consumer Sciences empowers students to become informed professionals and leaders who can navigate and shape the evolving landscape of consumer and financial well-being.
